I’d like to preface by saying I am in no way, shape or form a dog person. I’m 110% the exact opposite and do not understand why people keep pets in general, let alone dogs. If I wanted an alarm system, I’d have an over-weight guy install one in my wall .. But I digress.
Eddie is a Chocolate Mini Labradoodle (Labrador cross Poodle), he was brought into my parents pet store last week, semi-abandoned. The original owners had him for 8 months, he is 9 months old in all. They hadn’t quite “taken” to him and I suspect he was a touch neglected.
He had a shaggy coat, dread locks and hardly wanted to play fetch. After an afternoon of cuddling with Jacinta and constant ooh’n and ahh’n from her, I finally gave in and decided to pat the poor thing. I was then persuaded into letting him come home with us, just until he found a new home…
I told myself it would just be a night. No big deal, right? Then I reminded myself when I was walking through Woolworth’s picking up some Dr Harry verified, over-priced bag of food that no, I wasn’t keeping him; I was just being nice and the person who decided to adopt him could use it… Right?
I used the same excuse when I went to pick up some Fido’s Emu Oil Shampoo; $20.00 for a small 250ml bottle. After everything, he deserved a bath. I used the same quiet explanation when I bought 2 “anti-rust” top of the line dog bowls and a brand new funky coloured dog-leash and collar.
Then today was the tipping point. The moment the bubble around my head popped; the “realisation”, if you will. I booked him into a “Puppy Parlour” to have him shaved, toe-nails clipped, ears plucked, and de-flea’d and cleaned. Safe to say, Eddie found a new home and it ain’t the puppy parlour!
I never imagined myself as a dog person and still cannot believe I’m letting one sleep at the foot of my bed. But I guess we all have a soft spot in our hearts, especially for orphans. After just a short time, he is playing fetch, rolling around on our carpet and all in all, making us fall in love.
